Summer in Stockton
Summer looks different for every family. For the youth in our program, one thing stays the same. Their Friend shows up, week after week, no matter what season it is.
School wrapped up this month, and youth across our program were promoted to the next grade. Certificates in hand, ready for what comes next.
That kind of progress is built slowly. It comes from months of showing up, trying again, and having someone steady in your corner. Our Friends (paid, professional mentors) walked alongside each child through all of it, and the credit for how far they have come belongs to the youth who did the work.
Then the calendar turns
For a lot of young children, summer is the stretch of the year that asks the most of them. There is less structure to the day, fewer routines to lean on, and more uncertainty at home.
It is also the season a child waits all year for. Our youth are out enjoying it already, with waterfront outings, water play, a trip to the movies, and time at our Clubhouse in the heart of downtown Stockton.
Their Friends are out there with them, in the community, keeping the rhythm going. Same person, same commitment, different backdrop. When the school-year structure falls away, the one steady thing in a child's week does not.
What 12+ years actually looks like
Our commitment is not seasonal. A Friend does not pause in June and pick back up in August.
This is what 12+ years, no matter what, looks like in practice. Not only the school-year moments. All of them. The classroom mornings and the hot afternoons at the waterfront, the good weeks and the hard ones, all of it counted the same.
That is what makes summer worth protecting. It is not a gap to get through. It is three more months of a child learning that someone reliable is in her corner.
A foundation still being built
This is our second year of operations at Friends of the Children – Stockton, and we are honest about where we are. We are a growing chapter, and this summer is early in a long story.
The relationships our Friends are building with Stockton's youth right now, these early, consistent, trust-filled connections, are the foundation everything else will grow from. Every outing this summer is part of laying it.
Your gift helps us keep showing up. For every outing, every school morning, every hard day, and every small win that adds up to something real.
